DIGITAL CAMERA RAW CONVERTER COMPARISONS
with Canon 10D RAW images
Capture One, BreezeBrowser 2.7, Canon's File Viewer Utility and Adobe's Camera RAW Applications

CANON FILE VIEWER UTILITY
overview

This file browser and RAW converter is included in the OEM software bundle with Canon DSLRs. You can view files on the camera while it is connected to your PC and facilitate the transfer of those files to your PC. You can also view existing JPEG and TIFF files in folders on your PC. However, it can't decode and thumbnail some 16 bit TIFF files generated in other image editing applications. I've even had it fail to decode and thumbnail some JPEG files created in other image editing programs. File Viewer can output to JPEG and 8 or 16 bit TIFF. You can print an index print of image files you have selected in the active folder. This action prints a small thumbnail of the selected images including date and time shot and file name. You cannot print a full size image. Canon's File Viewer RAW conversion is in the middle of the pack in speed at 11 seconds to convert and save to full res 16 bit TIFF. If you change any of the image decoding parameters the program regenerates the preview and if you make a couple of changes it turns out to be a very time consuming process. Canon's File Viewer can batch process with individual tool settings for each image. Double clicking a thumbnail prompts the application to generate a preview image of that thumbnail in the main window area. Canon File Viewer is the only application in this test that preserves and reads all of the original camera embedded EXIF information after conversion. The very slow thumbnail regeneration times coupled with the preset adjustments concept made me quickly loose interest in this application. See a screen capture of the GUI below.

To print this web page correctly you will need to set your printer's page setup properties to 'landscape' paper orientation
