DSLR vs. FILM SCAN COMPARISON
IMAGES OCEANSIDE HARBOR - 2004, SAN DIEGO COUNTY |
| This page contains a three image comparison between a
4X5" Velvia film scan, Canon 1Ds Mark II
and a Canon 10D. The 4X5" Velvia chrome was scanned at 1200 dpi on my
Epson 2450, which gave it a pixel resolution slightly larger than the Canon
1Ds Mark II. The 1Ds Mark II image was shot in RAW and converted with Canon's DPP 1.5. When these comparisons were made my favorite RAW converter, Capture One, didn't support the 1Ds Mark II yet. The 10D image was shot in RAW and converted with Capture One to TIFF and resampled up to equal the pixel resolution of the 1Ds Mark II image. Defaults were used for both RAW conversions except no sharpening was applied. Screen captures with 'Hypersnap' from the full res TIFF images and saved as quality 90 JPEG. My 0pinions: The 4X5 scan wins by a small margin. The 4X5 chrome scanned image might be significantly better if it were scanned on a drum scanner. Nonetheless, the 1Ds Mark II compares very nicely to the Epson 2450 scan of the chrome. The 10D image is not in the running with these two images. |
