This page contains a three image comparison between the Canon 1Ds, Canon 10D and a Provia F ISO100 film scan. The 1Ds and 10D images were shot in camera RAW and converted with Adobe's Camera RAW plugin. Defaults were used for conversion except no sharpening was applied. Both DSLR images were then resampled up to 5500X3600 pixels in Photoshop using bicubic interpolation. This was done to produce digital images from the DSLR image files which were approximately the same size as the 4000 dpi 35mm film scan image. No image adjustments were applied after conversion. The Provia F image was scanned with my Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED at 4000 dpi. with ICE at normal and GEM at level 2. Some minor color and tonal range adjustments may have been applied to the scan but no sharpening of any kind was applied. The white cutout represents the full resolution screen capture area in the comparison images.

My opinions and observations are as follows: The Canon 1Ds image has the most detail but the moiré pattern in the building roof is excessive. The 10D image has slightly less image detail but far less moiré pattern. This might be because the 10D has a stronger anti-aliasing filter than the Canon 1Ds and/or the roof tile pattern frequency in the building at 10D sensor resolution precipitates less moiré. The Provia F ISO 100, 4000 dpi scan comes in tied with or very slightly behind the 10D image due to slightly less edge acutance in the image detail areas and a little noticeable film grain. A reminder that shot as camera RAW, the DSLR images have had no sharpening in any stage of image creation.
