This photo from the San Diego Wild Animal park was shot on Fuji
Provia F ISO 100 with a Canon 24-85mm lens at 24mm, f8 and 1/250 sec. Full
resolution (4000 dpi) images of the corresponding application of image
processing are available by clicking any of the images below. Each of the larger
images represent a little more than 1/2 of the area of the original transparency
represented above. The larger images are2700X2200 pixels and 1 to 1.7
megabytes in high quality (low compression, very few artifacts) JPEG. All of the images on
this page are 400X400 pixel screen captures from a full resolution scan.
| As with ICE there is a slight but proportional
softening of the hard edges parts of the image as you apply these tools at each level. However,
judicious application of unsharp mask either in Nikon Scan or in a good
image editing program can bring these areas close to pre-processing levels of
sharpness. Although ICE also slightly reduces noticeable grain, you can see that
GEM does not remove spots and blemishes. |

| A more dramatic reduction in
grain can be seen in these two images of the lower part of a Tiger's
face. The photo was shot with Provia F ISO 400 and a Canon 100-400 lens.
This image is not very sharp but the out of focus areas provide for a good
test of GEM. |
